I don’t believe in luck. The idea of good luck or bad luck suggests that events in our lives happen randomly. If we find a parking space near the store, we might think we’re in luck. But if the store is closed—we’re unlucky. I think attributing everything to luck or chance minimizes the awesome truth of God’s sovereignty. Some may live their lives thinking it’s all up to the luck of the draw, “but our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases” (Psalm 115:3).
Rather than good or bad luck, I prefer to think in terms of blessings and trials. God will send both joy and struggles into our lives, but we can rest assured, “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28).
This has been my experience with mushrooms. Anytime I go out looking for them, I have no luck–I mean, I don’t find any. It’s a struggle. But then one day, I stopped along a country road near a creek to stretch my legs, and there were all these nice black morels. Was it by chance? Am I lucky? I say it was just a blessing from the Lord. He gets all the praise—not dumb luck.
Too often we miss the little things God is doing in our lives. But He has a perfect plan, and He “works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11). The trials we face aren’t bad luck, but God will test us and strengthen us along the way. He wants us to trust Him in the trials and praise Him for the blessings. Oh, and you might think you could talk me into telling you where I found those mushrooms. I say, good luck with that.
