So, after being dandelion central for several years, I finally bought some weed-and-feed for my lawn. Since we have sandy soil and many weeds, I initially feared if we’d have anything green left at all! But to my pleasant surprise, with a couple applications and some good rainfall, our lawn is looking better! Our neighbor has a much prettier yard, but at least our dandelions are gone, and the grass is coming in healthier and thicker. Whoever invented this weed killer/grass grower mix is a genius.
I think the Bible has a similar effect on the believer. Want to kill sin in your life? Start with the Word. “Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee” (Psalm 119:11). Memorize verses or chapters of the Bible to have a sharp Sword ready to fight off the Tempter’s attacks. Killing the weeds is the first step, but next comes the growth. Peter writes about this when he compares the Word of God to the milk babies need to mature: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” (1 Peter 2:2).
The sweet thing about weed-and-feed is, the healthier your grass becomes, the harder it is for the weeds to come back. The good growth crowds out the bad. I’m sure it works the other way too. Do nothing, and the weeds start to take root and steal nutrients from the good grass again. Hence a regular application of the killing + growing mixture is essential.
Let’s face it, our hearts can be dry and inviting to little weeds. If we’re careless, a few clovers and dandelions can lead to those thorny stalks no one wants to touch. God’s solution? Weed-and-feed our lives with His Word.
