If you follow basketball much you’ve probably heard of a “triple double.” Sounds more like some good hits in baseball, right? But a triple double in basketball means a player accumulated double digit statistics in three different categories. For instance, Nikola Jokic of the NBA averaged at least 10 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds per game this year. That’s a triple double.
Well, I wanted to share with you a different kind of triple double from the Bible. It’s three sets of doubled words from Isaiah 26:3-4: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.” I’ve highlighted the triple doubles here so hopefully you can see it.
Oh, I need to tell you that in the original Hebrew, “perfect peace” is actually the word shalom used twice in a row for emphasis. So, the Hebrew reads shalom shalom, or peace peace, and we translate it “perfect peace” to help us understand its importance.
Anyway, here’s your triple double from Isaiah 26:3-4: peace peace; trust trust; LORD LORD. It’s a very simple formula, but it is profound at the same time. We long for peace, real peace, “peace peace,” in the midst of our troubles. Good news! This kind of peace is readily available to all who trust–not in themselves–but trust in God. Just having faith in something or in people or in yourself won’t bring you much peace. Complete peace is found when you trust fully in the LORD, the LORD who is forever faithful. He is “an everlasting rock” that you can build your life upon.
Peace, peace can be yours. Trust, trust is all you need. The LORD, the LORD will be your everlasting rock.
