I am so thankful for freedom: freedom in America and freedom in Christ. This week we celebrate our national freedom. Whereas there are still countries that deny Christians the freedom to worship God publicly, we here can gather in Jesus’ name to sing, pray, read the Bible, and proclaim the Good News of salvation.
I’m thankful for those brave men and women who established this nation, under God, with principles like religious freedom. I have a friend who serves the Lord in countries where open worship of Christ is prohibited. He’s been arrested, held at gunpoint, and threatened with worse things for teaching people how to be saved by Jesus. My friend believes it is worth the risk so that people who are in bondage to their governments might find true freedom through the gospel.
As Jesus said, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). What is this truth? The truth is that Jesus was not just a man or a good teacher. Jesus said He was “I Am” (John 8:24, 28, 58). He was God Himself, who came to pay the ransom price that would set sinners free (Mark 10:45).
I know America has her problems. But today, we are free to hear and share the message of Christ so that others may trust Him and find lasting freedom in His name. Some misunderstand the need for spiritual freedom. Jesus makes it clear it’s freedom from sin that we need (John 8:34).
If you feel trapped in sin and guilt over your past, you are not alone. Turn now to Jesus. He is the Truth that will set you free. He died and was raised to release you from sin and its consequences. If He sets you free, you are free indeed!
