Tonight (Thursday) is our last night for our annual Soccer Camp (VBS) at Cooperation Park. Our aim has been to share the Good News about Jesus with the kids of our community while helping them have fun improving their soccer skills.
You might think soccer is boring: “I’d rather watch paint dry,” one person said. But for me, soccer has been my favorite sport since I kicked a beach ball between two lawn chairs at age six.
You don’t have to be tall (like basketball) or strong (like football) or able to hit a fast pitch. With soccer you just run and kick. Then you run some more, which isn’t my favorite part, but you run so you can kick that ball again.
More than good exercise, soccer teaches you the importance of teamwork. I’ve seen good players try to dribble the ball all the way to the goal and score by themselves, and it never works. There’s too many players on the other side determined to stop you.
But a good team knows the value of passing (sharing) the ball with each other. It’s really a matter of trust: giving the ball to a teammate believing they will do their best, and that they will pass it back to you later.
I’m thankful for Pastor Matt & Sarah, and all our volunteers, younger and older, who worked as a team this week to make Soccer Camp (VBS) a great time for the kids. I’m also thankful for the folks who oversee and maintain Cooperation Park—what a gem we have right here in Indian River. And finally, thanks to the parents and grandparents who care for the little players we had this week. “Children are a gift from the LORD” (Psalm 127:3), and we should find every way we can to lead them to Christ.
