I learned one very important phrase on a missions trip to Mexico: Solo Cristo es perfecto. It means, “Only Christ is perfect.” Only Him.
We try our best to reach perfection in many areas. From our skin or physique, to our golf swing or gardening. We’d like to have something turn out exactly right. Maybe we want others to notice how good we are at this or that. Maybe we just want to feel like we excel at something. Yet, if we’re honest, we can improve, but we’re never perfect.
Maybe we don’t even know our imperfections. Not too long ago I passed someone driving a luxury SUV. Expensive. Well made. Comfortable I’m sure. But one of their headlights had burned out. In this case, the driver may have been feeling good about his fancy car, but everyone else could see there was something missing.
On the other hand, if you saw me preaching one Sunday a few years ago, you might have thought I looked rather dapper in my black suit and dress shoes. What you didn’t know is that I’d changed into my suit at the church and had forgotten my socks! I had to spend the service keeping my bare ankles out of view.
The point is, we might think we’re flawless and others know we’re not; or, we might hide our flaws to fool those around us. Either way, we’re not perfect.
So we say, “well, nobody’s perfect.” Which sounds true—unless you’ve come to know Jesus. He is sinless, flawless, perfect. And no wonder, since “in Him all the fullness of Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9). Jesus is fully God: the “First and the Last” (Revelation 1:17) and the great “I Am” (John 8:24). He is our Example to follow, but also our Savior when we fail. Let us trust Him and humbly and gladly confess, Solo Cristo es perfecto.
