When did you become a Christian? When did you become a believer in Jesus Christ? When did you get saved? When did God adopt you as His child? When did you come to trust that in Jesus, all your sins were forgiven, and you had eternal life? When did you surrender your life to Jesus as Lord? When did Jesus become your first Love; your greatest Treasure?
October always reminds me of when I made certain I was a follower of Jesus. I was ten years old in the fall of 1985, and though I had asked Jesus into my heart as a younger child, I wanted to make sure I believed the gospel. One Sunday, an elderly couple visited our church, and they set up a table with a variety of gospel tracts. You know, little pamphlets that explain what Jesus did and how you can be saved by His grace. As I walked by the table, I slipped one of those tracts into my pocket.
That afternoon, I sat under a big maple tree in our backyard. I carefully considered each part of the gospel:
1) I was a sinner. Well, I knew that to be true.
2) Jesus died on the cross. I thought about that. Did I believe He loved me enough to die for my sins? I did believe it.
3) Jesus rose from the dead. That was a miracle. Did I believe that? If He could make the whole universe, He could do anything. Yes, I believed He rose again.
4) Call on Jesus to save you. “For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). And I did. If I wasn’t already a Christian, on that day I knew I was.
That’s my testimony. What’s yours?
