I was at a pro baseball game once where a credit card company was giving away beach towels to anyone applying for a card. Whether or not you qualified for a Master Card or Visa was irrelevant. The towel was a gift you could keep.
The Bible teaches that eternal life is a gift from God that is only received by faith in Christ alone. This is the message of Romans 6:23: “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord,” or as the well-known John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Yet, many times, true Christians doubt their salvation. They want to be saved. They hope they are saved. But they fear they may miss out on heaven on a technicality. They worry, “Did I believe enough? Did I pray the right words? I don’t always ‘feel’ saved. I been there myself.
So, here’s what the Bible says: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). That’s the promise. Believe on Jesus, the Son of God who died and rose again to be your Savior. How do you know if you have the right kind of faith?
Well, let me ask you this: are you trusting in anything else to save you? Good works? Going to church? Christian parents? We can’t trust in any of those things. But if you say, ‘No, I’m only trusting in Jesus,’ then according to the Bible, you’ve received the gift of eternal life. You can rest, because Jesus “finished” the work for you (John 19:30). You can keep the Gift, and God will keep you by His power (1 Peter 1:5).
